Battling Acne - The best place to start

Acne is one of the most common and most painful skin conditions, both physically and mentally. Put simply, acne is caused by a blocked and infected hair follicle. These blockages manifest on the surface of the skin as pustules. From mild to chronic, acne may occur on the face, neck, decolletage, arms and back. In clinic we often see acne presentation ranging from redness, congestion, heat in the face, oiliness and pustules to blind cystic acne including blemishes.

There are a few reasons fueling acne ranging from hormonal to bacterial overgrowth but let's dive deeper! Hormonal fluctuations can occur through many stages of life including pregnancy, puberty and menopause and are often a catalyst for acne. Varying levels of testosterone stimulate excessive activity within the sebaceous glands. Another culprit is bacterial overgrowth on the surface of the skin, which results in the delicate acid mantle struggling to maintain its balance.

Treating acne can vary on the professional, and the best way to treat acne is always up for debate. For us at SJM Skin Aesthetics we always opt for a gentle, therapeutic approach; targeting inflammation, creating balance in the skin, supporting the immunity in the skin to help fight infection while healing  and strengthening that acid mantle/skin barrier. We acknowledge that oil production and quality is always an element needing attention so skin care is always a topic of discussion with our clients.

We believe skin care is all about maintaining balance and creating a harmonious environment for skin to thrive and function optimally. Additionally, we always ask our clients to take a look at their diet and lifestyle factors as we know outside influencers play a big part in skin behaviour. This holistic approach is taken with our 60 minute Advanced Skin Analysis where we take you, the individual, and all aspects that make you - into consideration. If you are suffering with acne or need a review consultation on your progress, skin care this is where we recommend you start.
